Bonus Action - Mimic Queen Revisited

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Jordan and Braeden sit down with friend of the show Elijah to discuss his feedback on our recent module, Into The Jaws Of The Mimic Queen.

Ladies Gentlemen and nonbinary friendswelcome back to another triple advantage bonus action, one of thoseshort little segments where we sit down and we look at something that wewouldn't normally look at in the triple advantage: podcast as often not asalways. I suppose I am joined by Jordan Jordan. Has It goine tonight oind great braiden, thanks for havingme again, you say that IIS wasn't your idea! Yeyes joining the two of us. We havethe pleasure of welcoming Elija Elijah, welcome to the show Hos it Gong hello.Thank you. Thank you for having me we're glad to have you now. Okay, sowere weare having you, because you have recently so, first of all, whydon't you introduce yourself? whone? Don't you? Let us know an you areexactly sure I am Elija. I suppose I know Jordan, which is how I, I guess how I came to the situation, but I basically I'm a IDM as well as a player. Of course. Actually, I'm a player an in some of in thecampaign that Jordan is Dming, so I've heard some things on this podcastabout my own campaign about how bad we've done so whats anyways yeah. No, so I found myself running, I had a request from a friendof mine to be a DM for campaign that was with everyone, her and and allof her roommates. So four four players that all had pretty new, but some experience and with the Emminn andI wanted to have a nice one shot to run for them, and so I actually askedJordan what but one shots RCSSA has made- and he pointed me to acouple- and I thought into the jaws of the Mimic Queen seemed very interesting,so ive recent I've recently ran that and yeah very, very interesting, all rightso you're here today to talk to us about those results, correct that the ER experience, yeah motel, all right yeah. Let's start off just with a couple of cursryquestions for like how long so you said that you're player in Jordan's gameyou've been asked a DM for your friend and her roommates. How long have youbeen dming for and how long have you been playing for? On top of that? Ifit's a different answer, oh well, yeah I've been playing, for I mean. Maybe Jeordin should keep mehonest because he was the one who introduced me to the end. I think it'stwo and a half years, thee years, three, three for sure: Okay Yeah, becausewe've been in the WILDNA campaign for like over a year now a year and a halfand like before that we were in a campaign for over a year together aswell, but yeah. So at least at least two anda half, probably three years so yeah and I have been damning for...

...a little less than that. I actuallythink like two years, maybe a little under two years. Okay, although not you know, with with large, with liht breaks in metween sure yeah doesn't take long. Does it youstart playing, and you start playing with your friends you're like yeahthey're, a good dea, but I could be better. I No! I don't think I ever thought Icould be better, unfortunately, but I just wanted to play more and therewasn't enough dms to go around, so I guess so. I figured I had to do itmyself. Well, let's talk about. Let's talkabout this session that you just had where you ran through into the jazs theMamic Queen, so that was, as you mentioned, a madrule that we is the RCSput out our good friend Dave Gepta was the lead author and original creator ofthat. What did you whant? Don't you walk usthrough how the session went? What did what was the overall feel of whence? Doyou think Ityeah? I feel like there's some somegood background. I should give of things that I knew coming into thiscampaign. If that's okay, of course, yeah O,initially right right away, I kind of asked what they wereinterested in about th nd, so those various levels, but they ere all pretty pretty new level. So I think one personhad never played the ind before and everyone else, those a those for peopleall the other people had played before, but like maybe one or two one shots ora campaign that only lasted a few sessionis kind of thing. So I kind of asked what what they youknow, what they had liked and they all liked the role play aspect much morethan the the combat ACTSO. At least I that'swhat they told me like before, before even starting and people all right, that's what they told you. Yes, Thath t that makes it sound like you know a bythe end. They had different opinions, but we'll find out no on no, I thinkthey had the same opinion by the end. That's we yeah no anyway. So this one of thereasons I chose this campaign is, there was a good level of intrigue and want into it. I think theonly other one shot I ave ever ran was ana fully combat and I knew that wouldn't be aut there alleyanyways the. I guess I guess the my my main point about how how Thi?Generally, it went is that you know similarly similar how how they said that theymostly liked the ow, the intrigue or whatnot the are rolplaying. They got. They got pretty intense with the roleplaying and thenwhenever there was combat it was it was kind of long and drawn out. So Ithought that was a a little interesting hat. I haven't now really not really dmmed or even playedsessions, particularly like that,...

...but t the role playing was prettyinteresting. I guess you're used to people being alittle bit more like yeah, combat kind of thing and they yeah into it and yeahyeah. I feel like in all the campaigns that I've played the combats like exciting, and you knowat least I am excited for the combat when it comes so it was interesting tosee a different side of that started. Okay, so so what did? What did yourplayers think then? Overall, like a by the end Itik, I think they had the same. I mean you know. I do want to go into thedetails of like right. Al Right went away, Wi, suppose, okay, so so rightoff of t e Bat. This is all online right because, because covid so I asked them o all make characters inadvance, and I knew they y didn't have that much experience. So I sat downwith what Y my one friend and made the character with her just to get e Gage of how muchexperience there was, and also so that you know if they helped they could askher certain questions, but also that was more just like usedmd beyond to initially set up yourcharacter for Fr ease of creation or what not is what I suggested and use point by, and you know the basicstuff like that. However, I did say, like you know they can, they can talkto me if they want to talk about their character idea it soundd like they. They did know the classes and whatnot, though so like they. They had characterideas and they turn them in the classes which is which is exactly what I wanted. In the past. I've had had times where people had like had class ideas andthen tried to make a character around that which I've never thought went thatwent as well, but fo for new characters at least anyways. So when I made them most sendme their characters before before the session, and they had kind of warned me of this, butthe characters were were definitely not made for for combat as well. So Isuppose my favorite was was t a warrior who dumped strength anddecks and kind of con that was that was interesting, had hadgreat, had great mental stats for warrior. That's not the most useful, but I mean that is the character a they want to create. They want to create asoldier who was old and no longer strong at all and so like over overconfident because of his youthkind of thig awesome. So yeah I mean that was yeahbuild ar the prenof characters. You can...

...really only bring out in a one shot anI an SOT, exactlly yeah. I wish I kill them. Aff Tho Tochyou a Leftin but thins didn't work like that and endingoutso. I guess the rest of the characters. You know we're pretty normal. There wasa. There was a rogue. There was drew it a Doit tof the stars, I believe Yeah Rs.I did thes same one in that place. Has Oh yeah tat'it yeah. I played the sameclass. That's awesome! It was a lot of fun. Yeah yeah, I feel like. I only know about the moondroid, just because it's you know played so much that I haven't reallylooked into what even the other drew. The other dred subclasses do personallyso till feel like. I don't have that goodof a sense but anyways or Co. Stars is Great. I loved it. It was a lot of fun, I'mpersonally a fan of the circle of the deep by the Roral Sati Wev Oo, dbut. That's enough of that. That's a good pluk it'sad to get paid on the show. But how did your? I guess? How did yourplayers with that in mind? How do they react to the module itself? Do youthink they had a good time, despite the fact that maybe they weren't the bestoriented for some of the combat? I think they really enjoyed the roleplay. I gave him a lot of lediency about what they could do and how they could. You know how they could solve problemsor who they could talk to which which ended up me me being me, I had to make it make im a bunch of stuff on thespot about the politics of the town and the the relations of some of the differentpeople. The affairs going on which I thought was really fun as a DMto be able to kind of like make up some of that lawer on the spot, and you know, have the challenge in the mind of making sure everythings straight and always dangerous, but but fun is a dmn. You are better at improve than I am. Icould never come up with like politics like just off the top of my head andkeep that stuff straight over. I mean its fun ide, that's what ie heard andI'm just not great at it, and I'm sure. I'm sure you could do it,it was not very complex. Politics would do the politics ahead of time and thenuse that, but I I would not be I would I would not be great at coming up withit on the spot. I don't think yeah. I suppose I could have tried to thinkabout that before I actually actually kind of funny story, because I hadbefore the session. I was like frantically messaging Jordan about somequestions about...

...about the session more about the aboutthe book. Wigt, actually, don't remember if I askedthis one, but at least thought it and it was like it says that you know some people don'tlike. I SSO. I guess some background, thatthe characters talked to the mayor of his town and I guess I guess spoilers, but the mayor says if they ask them who wronged her she'll say. Well, she she had somepeople who disagreed with some of her policies. Sometimes, but you know she didn't think it was enough.Basically right, I and I' kind of I don't knowhow much you want me to diswell here, but I mean assuming anybody. That'slistening to this is yeah with either readit or yeah.Doesn't you should an eithe way it like that? We agreeyeah and then, of course, the the party then directly asked like okay well, who are some of the peoplethat may not have liked some of your policies. So I made up the story of the the StoneMason who want to erect a large statue in town toattract more attract more visitors partially because he obviously got paidto make this statue, but also because he's having a fair with the innkeeperwho isn't getting very much traffic, because you know nobody comes to this, the small town and some some some good interactions there, which, which I thought was kind of fun. They then got to like get a little bit involved involved inthat the session ended with one of thecharacters: convincing the Stone Mason. Actually, the warrior: Okay, okay, thisthis warrior, who had dumped all his stats. I don't think I've ever seen.Someone dump all of their physical steps anyways. He was amazing at like allchecks of persuasion and what andeception an whatnot. So, in this case, he successfully convincedthe stonemason to Iracti statue of this warrior in the center of town for forsaving the town, so that was that was the end Thas. This is the clusconclusion is after they saved everyone. They made a deal before before theywent off and at the end they came back to him and like hey, we saved everyone. You should you should. You know, build me in the center of town, so yeah. Thatis awesome, as you went way off script for some of this. I Guess, Oh goodness, just some of it, I'm into it yeah so that the I don't knowshul should I should I justgo. Should I go in more about like th? Thatwas only that was one case, and you know that was. That was pretty fun. Ithink, probably my favorite offscript part and my favorite part of rying. This campaign...

...was when you know they were gettingtired of fighting this dopple gang or who is copying the the woodmaker in he, thewoodwork shop er, the carpenter, who is whois kind of debranch to the rest of to the finalboss. I suppose you talk to him to find ot o ate a fairly key figure in theyeah yeah mucule, so they ended up like aggressing this, this carpenter, right away. You know, despite saying they don't like combat but they're, getting tired of fighting this. This carpenter, these fights were get out. That was the far first fight.Actually they actually were able to have some good investigation earlierand and find the the goat of the carpenter right away, and that was the first fight of this ofa session and it was going so slow like they were hardly doing any damage, and I said three of the Caracters I forgotto mention the fourth charcter there, as also halfwork barbarian, pettyclassic. That was the first character. Iever ever played was a half work byvarian. However, he liked to punch thingsinstead of using his battle Acx at least the beginning, so that was littleinefficient for damage. Okay, I had the same like I also had a half work, barbary and it like a punch things. The first time I ran this module Owat thesame Goup, interesting Allfto, all to compare whatthe rest of the party looked like. Yeah anyways, like the half or Prevari, was like the only one doing damage and the warrior was just trying to grapple, who actually got some lucky grapple checks like for having no strength yeah. The rug was like stabbing a little bitbut yeah try to gravel with with likenegative one strengt herally Neg rant, Oh hat's, so difficult and actuallysucceed, n three times in a row. I forget what the what a doppalgaer statwas, but it's plus zero. So I guess it's not toogood strength, but yeah had some bad roles for the wait. No expus four decks, though I don't remember how EXACTPLA thatworked, but that did legitimately successfully grapple and the do OlsoGan was just trying to get out for like was it. It might an two two or threeturns that's impressive AFOR act yeah but yeah, so they just pulled out n.They weren't really even fighting the DOPLO Ganger like He. The the barbarian was like punching the the mimic that came up whichactually turned into the the rocking chair, mostly because I a'll admit mostlybecause I forgot to mention there was a bed in the ROM when I when they firstwalked in, and so I didn't want to say,...

Oh and suddenly there's a bed, but Idid mention, as for the the the book leader Whatnot, that he is, orat least looks like he's working on a rocking chair. So I made that the mimicthat came to life at that point and yeah they were like attacking the mimica bit, but eventually they they just did some. They just lit the lift theworkshop on fire after crappling and pulling ADOPPL Gamer out of it and loked to lock them in a conside, which I thought was kind of clever I like, but then they then ey. They took theDovgar and they like successfully intimidated the warrior successfullyintimidated and then persuaded with like massive massive roles, the Dofo Ganger to to actually to was it called todople gang to to make himself look like the main person. They were looking forso mercy, the mayor's wife who had gone missing, so they convince the DOPPL Ganger to pretend to be the mayor's wife and togo and live with the mayor and say: Oh look, we found look. We found he ayorswife. You should give us at least half the gold nown and we'll find okay. This is the beginnings of an evilcampaign. God it's true. They they definitely were not. I mean therewas definitely some deception rules in there I gotta I thinkin the outside the box.Thinking on this party s, Goe yeah, yeah, so yeah I mean that was Masto. The firstthing they did after like going and checking out the criine scene, thenthey came, came to he. This carpenters workshop intimidated and convinced the DopeGanger to yecome the mayor's wife and and trickthe mayor into thinking. They had actually found the mayors, life and initially the mayor had had very little. You know didn't even suspect the DOPA Ganger at least not right away, notwhen they like had them was too excited to to even really do an insight checkinto the DOPPA Gar. I mean. Why would you assume that your wife, that you seein front of you is was faker right, especially when they're coming backwith a group of adventurers, Yeah Yeah, exactly hads a base faite thereactually later in the campaign, the DOPPL Ganger, despite it's thedespite the doct of baners proficiency, an deception like a plussix eception, the oppegan ruled a natural one on trying to pretend to bemercy, so the maker O that figured out pretty. Actually then, I rolled formayor's insight just for fun and theyr insight got inside of two, so...

...any other role for the DOFPA Ganger andit would have been fine but yeah, know th the mayor caught on youknow, but only after the the venture that left and already picked up somelike half their prize pool. They convinced the mayor to give them yeah, that's awesome. So at that ratelike did they even make it to the end, or was this just so far a the real stu? So I was, I was a little bit concerned that they wouldn't even careto go and like figure out the rest of where the restte block O Actualy, whereany of the people ar yeah exactly that yeah they didn't go to the TH.They never even went to the to the guard house to find the otherDoppe Ganger, so the like they yeah they bypassed that I was, I wasalmost thiyking. They would be like okay. Well, we solved it. Let's go tothe next town now and be stuck with that. Luckily they at least some of them e.The party did want to find out where the actual people were, so they continue to investigate even afterthey had returned to the fake, the fake mayor's wife. So I mean that's that's one of thereasons why they went to the stole Mason, so they went and talk to otherpeople. They talked to people that may not have liked some of the mayor'spolicies. There was a bunch of other stuff inthere o. How did they make it to the theMimic House? Then Yeah? So I may be waive a bit too long, but Iwanted them to. You know be able to I kind of want them to like figure out.If they could. I don't know figure it out in that. I know have have some time toinvestigate, so they went the next day. I actuallystarted the campaign at night and then they slept after that first night and I want them to be walking thro thewoods at the beginning of the night, because I thought it was more morespooky but anyways they slept and like checked out. The charred remains of thecarpenters workshop in the morning. Having they have had to like figure outexcuses about about that about how they why they burned down the carpentersworkshop and they were like Oh and Woodroad Woadrin, the carpenter hassadly passed h. They told he yeah. They said that they needed to. They were just falling, the lead at theworkshop and and it ended up that they had to burn it down. Oh so sorry, and then they eventuallyactually found the mayor in the woods is what they claimed so anyways. They went back to the back tohe the chart emains the workshop...

...after having. I think they also. Theyalso talk to thethe gardener. So the the DRUID was like giving out concoctions like healthy, green concoctions, and the mayor said that all that's great, because ou herbalist has left town. What not hervus is one of people who ismissing, and so you can become the new hervalist, so they also, you know, checked out, checked out thethe hervalist place briefly, but eventually they got to the chargeremains, and I just made the father and child come by at which point again. As for the the the booklet, that's WHA, I'm calling it the child basically talks about havingseen mantons in the wood and a house in the wood and whatnot and eventuallydoes guide them to the final boss. However, only after the the barbarian took a side trip to go tothe farmer and buy a chicken, of course, Li y brouht with them so yeah, understandable UHYEAH. So I guess, like one of the bigquestions that we had was: How did your game deviate, maybe from the standardmodule, but I think that it deviated in most ways from the standind BecauseyDGSO. That's that answers that what what do they think about thatfinal engcounter again, I think similar to theENCOUNTEROFOR. It was. It was quite long and they were not built for combat and even, for instance, thro. The roguewhich has the sneak attack- and you know, theoreticalw- be able to do lotsof damage. You Know Wa was you K, ow use the ropeto try to trip the house, some on its honest legs orwhatnot, which I thought was pretty clever, and you know I was going to letwork if if the roles turned out, I think I got a natural twenty on thefirst like wwas it survival check to like tie ittie the rope around one of the legs, however, did not do so well, whentrying again and then gave up pretty quickly. I was kind of excited tofigure out at would happen. If you, you look skywalker the S M, but yeah so because, because I knewthey were combat orieted and also live during the during the session, becausethe first combut went so slowly I did take out. You know I took out the dread Gazeboand I also lessened the amount of enemies inside the Mimic House and inratrespect. I think I was wrong to do so. I think I should have just killedthem off for being infuence.

I was being too nice and well, I wasthinking it was taking so long. I didn't want them to have more hitpoints to have to be through aright yeah, but I wasn't really thinking over. That also means that the the the enemies are doing less damage to themand so they're killing them off slower and therefore yeah the the rogue the rogue almost diedthey had to. There was some healing down there to to keep those. I forget what it was. Ite was sometemporary health points assigned and they were within those temporary healthhealth points for a little bit. But, alas, nobody nobody died so yeh it arrived, it survived cool good. I think I mean again, but I think it would havebeen great to kill the warrior off to show that the warrior did a Max ofthree damage and et was hitting each time he's trying to hit, and his bestattack was threugh damage so on on a beast that the mimtic Queen hashundred and fifty health points as written in the stap block actually alsoended up just culting out to a hundred because it was taking so long and notvery much things Otig, so yeah, I feel like again. I feel like I'venever had a session like a combat sastion like that, where the combatjust seems so slow and both sides aren't doing very much damnagain against the other side, and it's just kind of like gets to take down health into the jobs in the memicqueen is alevel seven or level five Brad and I can't remember, been a Whil Ol, five:Five, it Oel Five, okay yeah, so I mean you're a high enough level that it's like you're starting to get intothat point where the characters can do some damage like if they're built forthat right, we they were not yeah, so it just yeah. I guess it's difficult tobalance for a team, that's not built for that. So it's interesting. I'venever seen that happen before where a whole team was like that. That's reallycool, though so, did you as you w're playing through. Did yousee anything that like we could improve with the module or like with theirfuture? Writing or like anything like that that you were like Oh d, You knowwe should address this. I think I think I found a mistake inthe module, but I you know that's not really an actual thing. Your Mimic Queen says a hundred, Fifty Ha health pointsor fourteendtwent pus sixty, which I think average is out to two hundred. So you know that's the only thing I canthink of no yeah, no just I'm just I'm just kiddingwith that. I don't Care Hm.

I guess I actually did kind of have aquestion. I was wondering so I was running the Mimic Queen and Ididn't pully understand the attacks and there yea there's a multiattack, whichis one ton lash and one wife or two swipes and there's also this grab andchop attack, and I was I was, I started by just doing the tongue lash andswipes motack yeah. It was only like halfway through thethe the fight that I realized that grabandchomp seems like it would make the fight much more interesting in thatthat's. What is much more likely to have the houseenvelop or gest eat one of the players mm, so one of the players did eventually get well. A second player eventually goteaten up, so basically yeah. They tried to burst into the door. The barbarianwas laugt alone inside the house as it became animated and whatnot right nearthe end of this. The the fight, the rogue was also sucked into the house, but they had the UVIULA, so they did find it yeah. They did and yeah all got expelled, and but did they yeah they still. They stillwant to finish this finish: Flighting th the House. Instead of running away,I was wondering if they would just deck it out of there now t they had the allthose counts, people but yeah. I was curious as to whether otherparties would find the YOU UVULA just because it's notsomething- I guess I would normally think of, but I already knew it goinginto the session yeah so like I knew it was there and then you know that that'sa little bit like metagaming, though luckily I didn't end up in the house,so I didn't have to deal with that Meta game me but like yeah, I was thinking like would mycharacter even like look for something like that. I don't know I guess itdepends on and how you describe things but yeah. I think it did depend on alot about how I describing it. So you know I was. I was ascribing like the the inside ofthe Houseis. Is You know, switching between what looks like material walland then suddenly, fleshy for as the the house moves and whatnot, and I also described at one point the thegrandfather clock Turne into you know a large. You know flashy tumorfrom the from the ceiling, and I guess yeah. Then they then theydecided to target it. I suppose, because I pointed it out soallright they didn't do a check or anything to see what that would do. I just thought: Let's hit it. Yeahbasically, which are enough, is fair,...

...so yeah I did kind of give it to them alittle bit. I think I think it's someways that Ipersonally, I think that's okay, but you yeah you're call, I think, is itthe only piece of furniture in there crrest me if I'm wring, I think it'sthe only piece of furniture in there. That's not a mimick. I mean like there's, there's afireplace as well. You call that a piece of furniture ord not I don't knowbut fair enough- all right, yeah and overall what it went. Well, then, youthink the players enjoyed it. They came out of it and they said thatthey really enjoyed the role playing and the voices I wasdoing and the voices that they were doing. Andrigt whatnot. I think that they reiterated that they were not thebiggest fun of the combat aspect right, so I did not sway them. Unfortunately, despite my desire, so but yes, yes, they had fun and wereactually well. I guess not quite the ndrelated,so maybe not our! You know home on this podcast, butthere they are thinking of running another table top game, that what is itmoxster of the week that is supposed to be even more ro play, so one of the characters inthis campaign is going to be the DM of that and they've invited me to jointhat I'm curious to see how that is different from dnd. Definitely thatsounds like a lot of fun. Yeah I've never heard of it, but I'd definitelybe interested to hear about it. So I'll, let you know cool all right. Well, all right! Thank youfor joining! U SALOSIA! That was the most comprehensive review we have evergotten of one of Eur motules and by that also bem on is the first grootbetter it better. Keep that spot it yeah ITW nobody's reviewing our stuffright now. DM skilld is a slow moving place for reviews for people. That's kind of sad. Actually, I'm sorryit just do be like that, but yeah.
